Travelling to the Azores isn’t quite like travelling to any “run-of-the-mill” island. Indeed, the Azores are an archipelago that deserves more time than a long weekend. There are several reasons for this: discovering the countless beauties it holds, taking the opportunity to do several islands, adapting to the micro-climate that can sometimes alter the discovery itinerary… In short, travelling to the Azores means taking your time. Yes, but how much time?

1 – São Miguel island: how many days are needed to visit the main island of the Azores?

In 95% of cases, this is the island you’ll land on from the European mainland. Many travellers then decide, for a first stay in the Azores, to remain there for their entire trip. It’s a very good idea because São Miguel, the archipelago’s main island, is the largest, and holds a variety of spectacular landscapes that will easily keep you busy for a stay of a week or more. Travel to the Azores recommends 5 days of travel minimum, bearing in mind that the arrival and departure days are always disrupted by flights and therefore don’t really allow you to plan a sightseeing programme.

2 – How many days of travel should you allow to visit 2 islands?

To visit two islands of the Azores, such as São Miguel and Pico, or São Miguel and Flores, we recommend a minimum of 10 days of travel. Indeed, you have to factor in not only the arrival and departure flights but also the inter-island flights. There are, however, some small subtleties regarding the organisation of these flights that allow you to save time and money.

3 – How many days of travel should you allow to visit 3, 4, or even 5 islands?

To discover 3 or 4 islands in the Azores, a minimum of 15 days is necessary. Here again, there are small subtleties linked to the natural layout of the islands that let you discover several islands without losing precious time. The archipelago is arranged in such a way that you can visit 5 islands within a span of 17 days of travel, without rushing or feeling like you’re missing out on discoveries. But for that, an excellent knowledge of the archipelago is necessary, and that’s where Travel to the Azores steps in to help you.

4 – How many days of travel should you allow to visit the entire archipelago?

Following on logically from the information given above, visiting the entire archipelago requires 1 month of travel. One of the main reasons is that you often have to stop over on the main island, São Miguel, to reach some of them, as there’s only a direct route with it.

And if, after all this advice, you really don’t know where to start and which islands to prioritise, Travel to the Azores is here for you: we create your tailor-made stay itinerary, based on your travel dates, your traveller profile (couple, family, friends…), your budget, always within the framework of eco-responsible tourism.
